International Snow Sculpture Competetion at Breckenridge This Week

JANUARY 22-28, 2008
Breckenridge, CO - Experience the visual grace of the creation and exhibition of fleeting art as the Budweiser Select International Snow Sculpture Championships return to Breckenridge Tuesday through Sunday for the 18th year. Sculptures will be on exhibit at the Riverwalk Center, located in the heart of the Colorado ski resort town between Main Street and Park Avenue.

This year, 16 teams from around the globe will gather to compete in this prestigious event from countries including the USA, Canada, China, Mexico, France, Germany, Spain, Lithuania and the Netherlands. The states represented include Colorado, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Wisconsin. Snow Sculpting is attended annually by more than 30,000 people of all ages from across the U.S. and the world, organizers say.

Each year, four-person teams are assigned 12-foot-tall, 20-ton blocks of machine-made snow. These teams work within a five-day period to create sensational sculptures. From these blocks of snow, the teams often create enormous pieces of whimsy, although some deliver powerful political or social commentary. Some sculptures are even interactive and allow spectators to experience the tactile as well as visual grace of the fleeting exhibit.

The finished pieces are achieved after a total of 65 intense hours of work without the use of power tools, internal support structures or colorants – just the ingenuity of man and a medium that lends itself, if only temporarily, to the persuasion of chisels, saws, chicken wire and even carrot scrapers.

When the sculptures are finished, a panel of well-known artists and patrons of the arts serve as judges and present awards to the first, second and third place sculptures. Awards are also given for People’s Choice, Kids’ Choice and Artists’ Choice. There are no cash prizes; the artists instead revel in the reward of hard work, forged friendships, freedom of artistic expression and the satisfaction of long hours of preparation that lead to the event. - from

California Ski and Snowboard Safety Organization Pledges its Support of National Safety Awareness Week

The California Ski and Snowboard Safety Organization (CSSSO)—in its ongoing effort to protect the well-being of outdoor enthusiasts—hopes skiers and snowboarders will be even more aware of their surroundings and take additional precautions during the 2008 National Safety Awareness Week: January 19 to 25.

Dan Gregorie, the founder of the CSSSO, who lost his daughter when she slipped on unmarked icy terrain and fell to her death at Alpine Meadows in 2006, issued this statement:

“The CSSSO was formed specifically to educate individuals and families on ski and snowboard safety risks as well as to work with California ski resorts to provide the safest possible environment and experience. The CSSSO serves as an independent, factual public resource on the safety of California ski resorts, and mountain visitors are encouraged to be our eyes and ears by reporting to us any safety concerns that they become aware of and feel should be addressed.”

Dr. Gregorie said the organization seeks to work collaboratively with the California ski industry to establish best-practice safety standards, policies and procedures to be uniformly applied across the state in an ongoing effort to significantly reduce the number of preventable ski and snowboard deaths and serious injuries. He notes all resort patrons need be aware the state’s ski industry is very well protected against liability through a common-law doctrine of “assumed risk” and accepts no responsibility for their safety. Also, visitors should not assume all hazards are marked or unnoticeable dangers are identified.”

The public is encouraged to visit CSSSO at www.calskisafety.org.

VAIL OBSERVES NATIONAL SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK FOCUSING ON “PLAY IT SAFE CAMPAIGN”

Vail, Colo. – January 14, 2008– “Play It Safe” is the theme this year at Vail Mountain for National Safety Awareness Week which is set for Jan. 19-25. Want to learn to Tele?

The Beaver Creek Nordic sports center will be hosting two Telemark workshops this weekend. Employees are eligible for the discounted dependant rate of $48 plus discounted equipment rentals. The regular cost is $79 lesson only and $140 includes lesson and lift. "Come free your heel and free your mind!"

For Those not familiar with Tele - Telemark skiing is a term used for skiing using the Telemark turn, which is a technique first popularized by Sondre Norheim. It is also known as "free heel skiing." Unlike alpine skiing equipment, the skis used for telemarking have a binding that only connects the boot to the ski at the toes, just as in cross-country skiing. Telemark turns are led with the heel flat on the outside ski, while the inside ski is pulled beneath the skier's body with a flexed knee and raised heel. The skis are staggered but parallel, and 50% to 80% of the body weight is distributed on the outer ski, depending on snow conditions. The relationship between the two skis often is metaphorically understood as one longer, but curved ski. The reason for this metaphor is that it is this curve that makes the turn ratio of the skier and defines the relationship between the two skis.

Breckenridge Ullr Fest Kicked Off Today

Breckenridge's Biggest Party Of The Year Is January 6-11

This weeklong celebration of Ullr (pronounced Ooh-ler), the mythical Norse God of Snow, brings the legendary Main Street Parade, live entertainment and bar series, a Nordic event, Ullympics and an ice skating party to Breckenridge.

For more information on a last minute trip to Ullr Fest, or to plan for next year cal-l Saunders Travel at: 800-936-5573.

2007 Ullr Parade – The results are in and the winning Ullr Parade floats are:

  • First Place – Ullr’s Shack (Shredware)
  • Second Place – Alpine Hair (Ullr gets a massage)
  • Third Place – Ullr is Cooler (Sean Travis Organization)

Thank you to all of this year’s float partcipants!

History

In Norse mythology, Ullr was the winter god. He was the son of Sif and the stepson of Thor, the "God of Thunder." Ullr loved the cold, and delighted in traveling over the country on his skis or skates. He also delighted in the chase, and pursued his game through the Northern Forests.

He was so well skilled in the use of the bow and could go so fast on his skis that in these arts no one could best him. Each winter he covered the earth with snow to protect it from harm during the winter. It has been said that Ullr enjoyed the cold weather and loved traveling throughout the land, gliding along on his great skis, for pleasure and hunting.

One of his travels found him in Breckenridge, Colorado. Breckenridge seemed a likely place for Ullr to settle down, since he wasn’t looking to return to Norway any time soon. Ullr fit right in and took to the mountains. And every year, Ullr blesses Breckenridge with some of the finest snow in the world.

To repay Ullr for his gift of snow, we here in Breckenridge hold a Festival to honor the God of Winter. We call this little celebration Ullr Festival. This fantastic party all started back in 1963 when a few of the local’s heard that Ullr was in town. Well, they wanted to let him know how much Breck appreciated Ullr’s gift of snow, so they went to the Town Council and lobbied to start…‘Ullr Dag’ (Ullr Day in English). The first few years of the event were hailed with locals honoring Ullr with gold coins, parties, skiing, parties, and oh – don’t forget the parties.

As the years went on, traditions were formed such as the Ullr Ball, the Ullr Bonfire, the Ullr Parade, Snow Sculpting, Ullr King and Queen, the Ullympics and the dating game. Some traditions have stayed, such as snow sculpting, which has become its own event now called the International Snow Sculpture Championships. Other traditions have gone by the wayside.

From fake currency to burning old skis in the bonfire, Ullr Fest has always been about fun and partying…and Breckenridge knows how to hold a “killer party, dude.” Just ask any of the locals.

The Arrabelle at Vail Square, A RockResort Opens Tomorrow

VAIL, Colo., Jan 04, 2008 - Tomorrow marks the official opening of The Arrabelle at Vail Square, A RockResort. Located in Vail, CO, The Arrabelle, which is already being hailed as the crown jewel of the RockResorts collection, offers guests a magnificent hotel experience that combines Old World charm and the timeless elegance of Europe's grand resorts with the romance and world-class style of the region's alpine heritage.

Centrally located in Vail Square, just steps away from the Eagle Bahn Gondola and the slopes, The Arrabelle features 36 luxury hotel rooms and 66 condominiums that are based on the Biedermeier design style, an early 19th century German and Austrian art movement that evokes simplicity, elegance and functionality. Additionally, the resort boasts a traditional Germanic Glockenspiel that features a celebration of snow. "Stimulated by numerous regions of Europe, The Arrabelle at Vail Square utilizes these inspirations to create a unique lodging experience specific to Vail and its environs," said Stan Brown, executive vice president and chief operating officer of RockResorts. "In addition to world class skiing and snowboarding, off the slopes, Arrabelle guests will experience the highest level of amenities and services."

Furnishings and fixtures in the rooms were chosen to be consistent with RockResorts' reputation for luxury in design and amenities. The hotel rooms showcase an elegant built-in wood closet offering generous storage space and a floor-to-ceiling drapery canopy over the bed, a fireplace, lounge chairs and flat-screen televisions. The spacious bathroom suites feature a double door entry, a cast iron deep soaking tub and separate shower, heated marble flooring, a double sink marble vanity and a flat-screen television.

Additionally, The Arrabelle has 66 residences and penthouses with distinctive floor plans, stunning views and plush finishes. Owners of an Arrabelle residence or penthouse, along with resort guests, are able to use the hotel's many amenities such as valet parking, concierge services, butler services, ski/boot storage, the RockResorts Spa, fitness center and the business library.

Dining at The Arrabelle provides a memorable experience at the resort's mountainside restaurant, Centre V, a bustling, French-inspired brasserie with exposed brick walls, a shellfish shucking station, groin-vaulted ceilings and curved, wooden banquettes. Internationally-trained chef Thomas Salamunovich created and spearheaded the menu with dishes such as steak frites, trout almondine, fruits de mer platters, souffles and crepes. Salamunovich is renowned as the owner and head chef of Vail's award-winning Larkspur restaurant, which has received awards from the Distinguished Restaurants of North America and Wine Spectator. Chef Tyler Anderson, who joins The Arrabelle from The Equinox Resort & Spa in Vermont, is the executive chef who will oversee the restaurant on a daily basis, in addition to the 24-hour in-room dining services at the hotel and the culinary options at the conference center.

Guests can enjoy pre-ski and apres ski offerings in The Arrabelle's expansive Great Room, which offers a relaxing indoor space with a grand fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to the breathtaking mountain views. The Great Room leads to an open-air, elevated veranda with a "front row" view of Vail Mountain.

Meeting facilities at The Arrabelle feature an elegant conference and banquet facility with an approximate 2,622-square-foot Grand Ballroom that can be split evenly into two rooms, four additional meeting rooms ranging from approximately that range up to 1,200 square feet, and pre-function space.

Debuting in mid-February will be the 10,000-square-foot RockResorts Spa at The Arrabelle, where guests will be surrounded by a warm and inviting atmosphere. A dramatic water feature will welcome visitors at the entryway, while rose-colored marble floors and counters accented by yellow limestone will coincide to evoke a soothing ambiance. Marble and glass tile mosaics will invite one to indulge their senses in the rejuvenating spa treatments offered. The spa consists of 11 treatment rooms, including a couples suite, facial rooms, a water therapy room with Vichy and Swiss showers; a fitness center with top-of-the-line TechnoGym cardio equipment, personalized fitness trainer consultation services; a full-service nail salon; men's and women's locker rooms, each with whirlpool, steam room and dry sauna; private men's and women's relaxation lounges; and a retail outlet.

Perennially, the #1 ski resort in North America, Vail's accommodations and village experiences are as vast as its Back Bowls. Vail Square provides a slopeside, European-inspired village atmosphere complete with a variety of dining options, a town ice-skating rink, unparalleled skier services and high-end retail outlets. "The Arrabelle's thoughtful architecture and design inspired many surrounding properties to assume its European atmosphere, which will be unique from other parts of the Vail experience. The Arrabelle and Vail Square reinforce Vail's position as the leading mountain resort in North America, offering guests an exceptional vacation experience in a spectacular natural setting," said Brown.

The Arrabelle at Vail Square is located in Vail, Colorado, 100 miles west of Denver on Interstate 70 and 35 minutes east of the Vail/Eagle County Regional Airport. For more information, please call: Saunders Travel at 501-744-6353
